R. Strauss - Horn Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op. 11
III. Allegro

Barry Tuckwell, horn
NHK Symphony (1987)

Richard Strauss was only 17 or 18 years old when he completed his first concerto for horn, the instrument famously played by his father Franz. The elder Strauss, principal horn in the Munich Court Opera, found the work too difficult to play—but he must have been proud of the principles behind the music, which brims with the Mendelssohnian language he had instilled in his talented son from early childhood on.

The premiere was given in 1885 in Meiningen by Gustav Leinhos with von Bulow conducting. The composer could not attend, but his uncle was in the audience and reported that the work was very well received. The world would have to wait several decades for Strauss’ next horn concerto.

I know I’ve posted this video like a million times, but I feel I must inform you that the passage from 6:29 to 8:35 is the greatest thing in all music, ever. Listen to the horns at 7:33!!!!!!! I always wet my pants with those horns.
